Why Berg Backstops?
Why Berg Backstops?
Berg Backstops was built with one goal in mind — to train and develop complete catchers who lead with toughness, confidence, and purpose. The position of catcher is the foundation of every team, yet it’s often the most overlooked when it comes to detailed development. Berg Backstops exists to change that.
My name is Jake Berg, founder of Berg Backstops and Graduate Assistant Coach at Lipscomb University. Before coaching, I caught for five years at the collegiate level — starting at D1 Jacksonville University (2020–2022) and finishing at D1 Lipscomb (2022–2025), where I helped win two ASUN Championships. I also gained experience catching professionally in the MLB Draft League, where we won the league championship. Over that time, I’ve caught hundreds of college and professional games, worked with elite pitchers, and learned firsthand what it takes to play — and lead — at the highest levels.
Berg Backstops isn’t just about drills; it’s about building leaders behind the plate. Every session, camp, and clinic emphasizes the details that separate good catchers from great ones — receiving, blocking, throwing, communication, and leadership. But more than that, it’s about teaching players how to compete, carry themselves, and take ownership of their development. Catchers don’t just play the game — they run it.
What sets Berg Backstops apart is the combination of college-level instruction, a leadership-driven culture, and a commitment to each player’s personal growth. Every athlete that steps into a Berg Backstops session is coached with intention, honesty, and belief. The standard is simple: work hard, lead well, and take pride in mastering the toughest position in sports.
People can trust Berg Backstops because it’s built on experience, character, and genuine passion for helping young athletes reach their potential. I’ve been where they are, I know the challenges they face, and I care deeply about their journey — both as players and as people. At Berg Backstops, it’s not just about building better catchers. It’s about building better leaders, teammates, and men who impact the game far beyond the field.
